Family Vacation

On the winteriest day of the year (so far), we set out on our 1st family vacation. It was 14 degrees when we left and conditions were very snowy!

Kentucky was a mess...it was actually in a state of emergency because they had so much ice. All the trees were broken off and the power lines were sagging from the weight of the ice. There weren't any gas stations open for miles, but thankfully we had a full tank. Everything was shut down, even the hotels. Thankfully we made it close to Chattanooga the 1st night.

After driving, and driving, and driving, we finally arrived at our destination: Sanibel Island, Florida It was spring-like, green, and warm!

We found out that the resort had upgraded us to a beach-front condo. We had made it through a snow storm, and ice storm, frigid temperatures, and William's ear infection and sickness. We were determined to have a great time. :)

We brought our own food, and cooked at the condo. Wow, eating out can get old very fast! We had a blast just playing outside, enjoying the sunshine, and the beach.

I suppose the ocean will always have it's appeal to us, since that's where we started our first week of marriage. It felt kinda strange to be back at the beach, but w/ 3 more of us! There's something so calming, beautiful, and powerful of such a place. I love it! I love the sound and smell of the ocean. The kids had fun exploring and hunting for shells. Shelling can get addicting! William was hilarious...he kept finding "treasures" Justin called his finds, "William's Sea Trash" He kept picking up the orange spongy things...boy he liked them.

I love sunsets at the beach. And, you can't really mess up beach pictures...it's just so pretty!

The second day we were there, we rode bikes around the Island, and ended up taking the long route to go see the Island's Lighthouse. Just being outside, being active, was so exhilarating, after being cooped up in the house the past couple months. I was wiped out after that bike ride...toting the kids around, adds a little extra to the workout!

People were so friendly and complementary to us...there were a lot of older couples. Lots of midwesterners (huh, wonder why?) :) We even saw an Amish couple!

The wildlife on Sanibel was interesting. We got to see a Gopher Tortoise making a nest...up close! There were lots of seagulls who weren't afraid of people and plenty of pelicans floating in the water.

Daddy and his boys

Making sand castles and watching the sun set was fun and relaxing.

I'm so glad for you that you got to spend some time away together. I'm sure it was busy, but lots of fun too. Oh, how I long for some sunshine. We do not get much sun up here in the winter, but March is right around the corner :)
